Hydro Kit Upgrade

This project featured an LG Hydro Kit replacing a discontinued Daikin Altherma unit. The LG Hydro Kit is a refrigerant-to-water heat exchanger that acts like another indoor unit connected to condensers. DMG has successfully applied the hydro kits to both water source and air source heat pump and heat recovery systems over the past decade. LG updated their hydro kit lineup in 2019 to include a 3.5 Ton and 8 Ton nominal cooling models with updated controls. Both models can provide hydronic heating and cooling as well as pre-heating for domestic hot water. Hydro Kits can also be applied to provide “free heating” to pools and spas.

This job site used a single-phase heat pump with a 3.5 Ton hydro kit. The hydronic heating and cooling system serves the radiant ceiling panel with a straightforward 2-pipe changeover design. This design was an easy drop-in replacement to the previous air-to-water heat pump system.

The use of all-electric high-efficiency heat pump systems that can provide comfort heating and cooling continues to expand. Interest is growing in using this technology for heating or pre-heating domestic hot water. LG continues to expand its offering of high-efficiency water heating systems for the North American market.

Out with the Old, In with the New

HVAC Rooftop Unit Replacement is too often a like-for-like operation. It seems like the right thing to do when you only look at the cost. Direct replacement might take advantage of similar utilities, maybe a common curb, possibly the same controller, or some other perceived advantage. But what if the owner was never happy with the old system. Now they are signed up for another 10-20 years with the same issues.

The property owner wanted something better: they desired better filtration and ventilation than what the old system offered. And considering we’re well into the new millennium, they wanted intelligent controls.

Beyond better efficiency, the proprietors wanted equipment that was easier to maintain. No more belts to change; instead, they wanted direct drive backward incline fans. They wanted hinged doors for easy access instead of rusted and stripped screws. They demanded durability.

The decision was easy. They chose AAON for their new RTUs.

Value Engineering

How Often Does Value Engineering Deliver on Its Promise?

Value Engineering or VE means the HVAC systems have been simplified or streamlined to deliver results more efficiently without impacting design intent.

LG up close and far away

This high-rise development in the South Bay delivers when it comes to the VE offered using LG Multi V S single-phase Heat Recovery.

The original layout utilized standard multizone heat pumps serving multiple tenants. In effect, while any one tenant is using heating, the others would be locked out from cooling. While a controls scheme might balance the various tenants’ needs, such a solution seemed like a compromise – and it came with a significant price tag. By switching to the Heat Recovery or simultaneous heating and cooling product, every tenant could independently operate their unit in either heating or cooling without any additional controls.

The outdoor unit would fit the same footprint and require the same electrical feed. The indoor units are essentially the same. All the job needed was a small distribution box called a Heat Recovery Unit. Additionally, when the unit operates in simultaneous mode, there is “free heating or cooling” delivered by the system. This VE case study provided both cost savings and energy savings.
