Flow at Berkeley Labs

Flow Environmental System’s first U.S. demonstration will showcase the ANSWR CO2 Heat Pump system at the Department of Energy’s FLEXLAB® testing facility. The ANWSR system will demonstrate simultaneous heating and cooling in large commercial buildings. The project kicked off in July 2024 for an expected two-year installation.

ANSWR is a 100% electric heat pump utilizing safe and efficient refrigerant grade CO2 that can operate as a cooling-only chiller, heating-only heat pump or boiler, domestic water heater, or all at the same time with a single power feed as a simultaneous heating and cooling system. This innovative solution can assist California in its goal to decarbonize large buildings.

DMG’s Bay Area training center will install an identical operational system for training and education. Training courses will address the various aspects of these heat pump systems design, installation, and maintenance. Hands-on training for those involved in installation, service, and maintenance will help to ensure the successful adoption of this advanced technology to a wide range of existing large buildings and applications.

TCF is Ready for Title 20

The big topic of discussion in our industry involves the recent change in CA Title 20 regulations regarding FEI (Fan Energy Index) >= 1.0. This change went into effect in May of 2024. The Twin City Fan engineering team was ready ahead of the mandates with product revisions, selection software updates, and complete product testing. TCF fans and ventilation systems meet or exceed the stringent energy efficiency standards set by Title 20.

The TCF commercial and industrial product line covers everything you might need: axial, centrifugal, kitchen exhaust, gravity and roof ventilators, mixed flow, plenum, plug, utility sets, inline, lab and fume, heat and smoke, radial, wall mounted, and pressure blowers.

By offering energy-efficient, controllable, and reliable products, Twin City Fans helps businesses and institutions meet the requirements of Title 20, promoting sustainability and reducing operational costs. DMG product experts can help you navigate the changes and get a compliant fan for your project.

Fresh Air Indoors

Destination Dining

When taking in the scenery along the Pacific Coast in central California, it’s not only the views; you’re breathing in some of the freshest air in the world. Indoors, it’s impossible to assess Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) by taking in a deep breath.

Perched on a cliff over this beautiful stretch of the Pacific Ocean, the Sierra Mar restaurant wanted to improve the IAQ for their guests when it reopened for indoor seating. Delivering the best experience possible extends beyond the views, food, and drink; the Sierra Mar wanted to provide comfort and peace of mind to people enjoying their dining room. Their starting point was fresh air.

Fresh air dilutes contaminants. The CDC advises that bringing fresh outdoor air inside helps keep virus particles, including COVID, from accumulating in indoor spaces. Something as straightforward as opening a window adds fresh air, but this method has tradeoffs like controlling comfort and increased energy use.

DMG reviewed Sierra Mar’s HVAC system design, and the units were recommissioned to ensure outside air was being delivered as designed. To increase the air changes per hour (ACH), they added a stand-alone, high-efficiency Heat Recovery Ventilator by Ventacity. The VS-1000 HRV nearly doubled the total of ACH.

Ventilation is necessary for all buildings. Providing fresh air to guests, patrons, tenants, and residents of facilities is essential to help people feel safe and comfortable indoors. Talk to a sales engineer today about how to add more air changes to your existing HVAC system.

The Washington Post recently highlighted some of the restaurant’s efforts beyond the HVAC systems to create a space where IAQ matches the ocean view.

Earth Day

This Earth Day, Take a Look at What VRF Can Do For You

VRF was introduced to the HVAC industry as a great way to provide energy-efficient zone control to a wide range of buildings. Simultaneous heating and cooling from a single outdoor unit continues to be its strength. The equipment’s versatility has allowed us to expand where we use VRF. It is now common to use VRF for 24/7 cooling loads in modern buildings, IDF/MDF rooms, elevator machine rooms, and the like.

Combining LG Gen 5 VRF inverter technology with DOAS air handling units continues to expand the application of VRF.  This is great way to utilize these air-cooled heat pumps. The heating efficiency is competitive with “cheap” natural gas rates, while also reducing building first costs by avoiding the gas lines and meter.  LG VRF can even make hot or chilled water for a variety of applications.

VRF saves space, is incredibly quiet, and minimizes required electrical connections; especially when compared with other heat pump compressor options.

DMG has excellent product solutions to deliver ultra-high efficiency, all-electric heating and cooling solutions. Talk to one of our sales engineers about your next job that is powered by renewable energy.

Value Engineering

How Often Does Value Engineering Deliver on Its Promise?

Value Engineering or VE means the HVAC systems have been simplified or streamlined to deliver results more efficiently without impacting design intent.

LG up close and far away

This high-rise development in the South Bay delivers when it comes to the VE offered using LG Multi V S single-phase Heat Recovery.

The original layout utilized standard multizone heat pumps serving multiple tenants. In effect, while any one tenant is using heating, the others would be locked out from cooling. While a controls scheme might balance the various tenants’ needs, such a solution seemed like a compromise – and it came with a significant price tag. By switching to the Heat Recovery or simultaneous heating and cooling product, every tenant could independently operate their unit in either heating or cooling without any additional controls.

The outdoor unit would fit the same footprint and require the same electrical feed. The indoor units are essentially the same. All the job needed was a small distribution box called a Heat Recovery Unit. Additionally, when the unit operates in simultaneous mode, there is “free heating or cooling” delivered by the system. This VE case study provided both cost savings and energy savings.

DMG North – Update Regarding Continued Customer Service and Adjusted Operations

March 20, 2020

Our team remains dedicated to supporting our clients in the construction and design communities during these challenging times.  The businesses and individuals who are part of the essential workforce helping to address both immediate and long-term challenges in our community are continuing to receive deliveries from us and our suppliers for construction, repair, and maintenance projects.

Our physical facilities have adopted revised procedures to make for the very safest employee, vendor, and customer interactions.  We have shifted as many deliveries as possible to direct-to-jobsites and customers to minimize the number of individuals handling.  Will-call orders are now by appointment only at our warehouses, so that we minimize the number of people at a facility at any one time.  Scheduling will-call for your equipment or parts is easily done through your primary DMG North point of contact.

The majority of our team members will continue working remotely.  We have shifted to primarily using email and cell phones for external communications and patiently work through some of the challenges of team collaboration tools that are suddenly very popular [and frankly overwhelmed].

We maintain regular communication with our suppliers in the United States, Canada, Mexico, and beyond. Overall, the vendors remain dedicated to supporting current schedules and delivery commitments. Again, reach out to your primary DMG North contact if you have any questions or concerns regarding delivery schedules.

Our service team continues to provide support to startup or troubleshoot equipment at essential facilities.  We are in regular communication with customers concerning their scheduled appointments.  Advance notice of changes to previously coordinated schedules is always appreciated.

Stay safe.  Work smart.  We will get through this together.

Sincerely,

Joe Pipitone, President, DMG North, Inc.
